The analysis of the organization and of the programs of these Didactic Technology Centres in the United States and in Europe allowed her to outline cultural objectives and to specify the structural model and the sets of activities of a University Didactic Technology Centre which laid the ground for the creation of a new CATTID (Centre for the Applications of Television and Distance Educational Techniques). Her study visits to the US distance universities, such as the National Technology University, allowed her to design NETTUNO Network distance teaching model, based upon the use of computer, telematic and satellite networks and to identify new television production models.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Her research activity was mainly focused on the following three fields:

  • Training Structures and Methodologies;
  • Comparative Education;
  • New Technologies applied to Teaching and Learning Processes
It was carried out through the study and analysis of problems and experimentation and use of new media. The documentation of the results achieved was illustrated in many papers presented at conferences, in articles and books as well as in scientific television programs.
  1. Training Structures and Methodologies
    In this field she carried out research into the Secondary School in Italy. The outcome was presented in the book: M. A. Garito, “La Riforma della Scuola Secondaria”, Bulzoni, Roma, 1974.
    In addition, she developed a research program on the Teachers Retraining in Italy.  The results of the research were published in the volume “L'Aggiornamento degli Insegnanti in Italia”, Università di Roma, Facoltà di Magistero, collana "Contributi dell'Istituto di Pedagogia", serie II: Saggi 1975).
  2. Comparative Education
    Her research activities related to the Comparative Education issue addressed mainly questions related to the Teacher Training in Europe, the University System in Europe, and the Managers Training.
    The research work on the “Teachers Training” was carried out in six European Countries (France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Sweden and Holland) aiming at studying laws, the structures, methods and tools adopted in teacher training and retraining. The results of this research were presented in several scientific radio and television programmes and in the volume: M.A. Garito: “Imparano ad insegnare, Strutture Scolastiche e Formazione degli Insegnanti in Europa”, (ERI, Roma, 1981).
    The research work related to “The University in Europe” was carried out in 1983 in 18 universities of 5 European Countries (France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Poland). It allowed to identify the differences between the University situation in Italy and in other European countries, as well as to highlight the process of change that took place in the European universities after the '60s. The results were presented in several scientific television programmes and in the volume “L'Università in Europa”, (ERI, Roma, 1983).
    Managers Training - This research work, carried out in 1986 in the main manager training centres of the United States and of Japan focussed on:
    • The analysis of the production system during the transformations demanded by management due to technological innovations;
    • The analysis of various management training schools run  either by universities or by companies.

    The survey allowed the identification of the skills and the characteristics of similar professional profiles in different company environments in the United States and in Japan.
    In particular, studies were carried out on the training models adopted by some small and medium-sized enterprises in the United States and in Japan, in big companies such as FORD, IBM, Pillisbury (Usa), Mathushita, NISSAN, NIPPON Steel (in Japan), in the public administration and in banks (Sumitomo Bank), at Harvard University, at Massachussets Institute of Technology, at Warthon School in Philadelphia, and at the University of Tokyo. The results were presented in 12 television scientific videos entitled La Formazione dei Managers in America e in Giappone and in papers published by the journal "Universitas".

    The Research into the Europe of Universities was carried out in 1991 in five European countries (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy) with the objective of studying the different university contexts.

    This analysis was based upon the following frames of reference: historical context, institutional framework, organizational models and degrees of autonomy; teaching and research functions; teachers’ roles and functions and students’ points of view.

    The research was carried out making comparisons based on country and on the above-mentioned issues, analysing and studying documents as well using the television medium.

    The outcomes of the work done were shown in several scientific television films entitled "The Europe of Universities" broadcast on RAI 1, RAI Educational and in a series of articles and papers.

  3. New Technologies applied to Teaching and Learning Processes

    The results of her research activities concerning technologies and their languages applied to both face to face and distance teaching and learning, laid the foundation for the creation of the organizations she leads: the CATTID - Center for the application of technologies of “La Sapienza” University, Rome, Consorzio NETTUNO and the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO.
    With the Consorzio NETTUNO she created the first European distance-learning University, which was born from a network of traditional universities and applies the psycho-pedagogical model combined with distance-teaching by means of television and the Internet and face-to-face teaching at the Universities Technological Poles. The organisational method of Consorzio NETTUNO was implemented applying the outcomes of the following research activities: PLATO, SOCRATES – ECHANGE. The psycho-pedagogic and didactic model developed for Consorzio NETTUNO distance teaching and learning system was included into the Enciclopedia Pedagogica by Editrice La Scuola of Brescia, lead by Prof. Mauro Laeng, appendix A-Z, year 2002, page 1027.
    The outcomes of the CNR “Multimedia Didactic Communication and Distance Teaching” strategic plan were implemented in the model of video-communication and didactic use of television (This model is patented).
    The outcomes of the research and training projects LIVIUS and Med Net’U (Mediterranean Network of Universities) were used to create the organizational and structural model of the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO. (These models are patented)
    The outcomes of the GIOTTO, HERMES and HAMLET research made possible to create the didactic psycho-pedagogical model and the Internet-based didactic platform of the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO: www.uninettunouniversity.net, the first in the world in 4 languages (Arabic, English, French and Italian). (This model is patented).
    The outcomes of the VERDI project have led to the creation of the first island of knowledge on Second Life.

  • VERDI (Virtual Environment for Real Time Distributed Applications over the Internet)
    (Head of Unit) Consorzio NETTUNO in cooperation with Eutelsat Paris, INPIX/MEDIA Paris; CALT/INSEAD Paris.

    The research results led to the creation of a Virtual City of Knowledge that reproduced on the Internet a 3D university campus with different “Buildings” where all the faculties and student services are located: the Secretariat Building, the Faculty Building, lecture halls, Libraries, spaces for interaction and entertainment.
    In the Faculties virtual classes, virtual libraries, virtual laboratories and interaction tools that aim to develop collaborative learning processes between students and teachers have been introduced.
    Students who enter the 3D campus are guided by an avatar-tutor (or Socratic bot Tutor) who resembles the symbolic personality of Socrates. Besides guiding them in exploring the different learning environments, he coaches them through the interactive learning processes using the Socratic method.
    The technologies used are based on the use of Internet via satellite and in particular on the EUTELSAT OPEN SKY multicasting platform.
    The results were applied to create a learning environment on Second Life, in particular the Island of Knowledge of the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO – UTIU.

  • HAMLET - Hypermedia Academic Multicultural Learning Technology
    (Head of Unit) in cooperation with ALENIA SPAZIO S.p.a. and ITS S.p.a.

    The HAMLET Project results enabled to integrate the didactic-pedagogical possibilities of the various media at disposal and to realise an open and flexible learning environment characterised by distance education through television and the Internet via satellite, of the diachronic as of synchronic type.
    From a technological viewpoint the HAMLET learning platform is based on an interactive multimedia satellite platform: Skyplex NET. It is supplied with an intelligent system capable of welcoming the student and guiding him through the educational offer (Orientation Portal). The Orientation Portal, starting from a first analysis of starting levels, enables the student to assess his own basic skills helping him to choose a study path that best meets his needs.
    The Project results made it possible to create an open and flexible learning environment that allows the student, guided by the Orientation Portal, to access digitised video-courses in a customised way thanks to the content modularity, subject indexing and the bookmarks linked to the various learning environments.  In the Virtual Library the student, thanks to an intelligent query system, can consult, download, navigate texts that refer to the treated topics; in the Virtual Laboratory, the student can put into practice the knowledge gained in a “learning by doing” way. In the Didactic Cyberspace, the student is welcomed by a professor-tutor who has access to interactional tools that support to promote a collaborative and cooperative learning process. The experiment was conducted on a course that aims to train new professional profiles in “Web design”.
    The results of this research project enabled to create a new psycho-pedagogic model that is applied to the distance teaching model of the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO - (patented).

  • HERMES  “High Transfer Rate Medicine And Education Services By Satellite  ( Head of Unit)Consorzio NETTUNO in cooperation with Telecom Italia, NETTUNO, CITEC and TELESPAZIO.

    The Hermes-Giotto Project was carried out taking into account, one hand, the technological components available (television and Internet via satellite) and, on the other hand, the cognitive and connectionist theories and the related methodological implications linked to the television and Internet-based teaching processes, to telematic tutoring and to assessment and self-assessment systems. The model made it possible to overcome limits of space and time imposed by the training process and to create a “virtual environment” for learning that has a positive impact on attention –levels, on memory and that develops a new pattern of reasoning.
    The results of this research work highlighted that today it is possible thanks to the new technologies to:

    • Open up also at a distance new bi-directional communication relationships between students and professors;
    • Use the PC as the focal point of system where the contributions of different media converge, so allowing the realisation of a veritable “open” and integrated multimedia system.  The PC can deliver the following facilities directly from the university to the student’s desk: video-lessons, multimedia laboratories, intelligent libraries, multimedia products, databases, auto-evaluation systems, tutoring support, exercises, exams organisation and electronic notice boards.
